Linking assignments and grades with Schoology

The following actions can be completed by teachers after an administrator has completed the initial setup.

This article applies to Dragonfly, StudySync, Traverse, and Twig Science.

With the programs listed above, you have the option to set up an LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) integration with Schoology which will allow you to link assignments and enable grade passback between Schoology and the program. This prevents you from having to enter students' grades in multiple locations. Students will also be able to view their grades from inside Schoology*. 

*Dragonfly assignments that are only reviewed for completion but do not have a percentage grade will not be captured in the Schoology gradebook.

Turning on assignment linking/grade passback (teachers)

To turn on assignment linking and grade passback in your classes:

  1. Sign in to Schoology.
  2. Click the Courses tab at the top of your screen, then click on the applicable course tile (or create a new course).

  3. Click the Add Materials tab, then click on the app that your administrator created for you.

  4. If your admin hasn't already, pair the course with a class/group by selecting the class and then clicking Continue.

  5. All assignments from all classes/groups in your purview that have already been rostered (either manually or via an SSO integration) will appear listed for you. You can also add a new assignment if you prefer.

     Note

    For StudySync customers: If you create a new assignment, be sure the Target is the class or group that you just linked. The new assignment will then appear in your list of assignments, although you may have to go back in to the Schoology tab, reload the page, wait a few moments, and then click Add Materials and select the app again. 

  6. If it is not already synced, click the Sync button for the applicable assignment.

  7. The assignment is now available in the Materials section of your course in Schoology. Open the settings (gear symbol) and select Edit.

  8. Select the correct app from the Tool Provider drop-down menu and save your changes.

  9. If you haven't created an applicable Category already, create one and apply it to each assignment. The assignment is now linked and ready for students to complete.
Completing and submitting an assignment (students)

Completing/submitting assignments (student instructions):

  1. Sign in to Schoology.
  2. Select a course from the Courses tab.

  3. Then click on the name of the applicable assignment.

  4. StudySync, Dragonfly, and Traverse content will load INSIDE Schoology. Students using Twig Science: You will be redirected to the Product Portal to complete your assignment.
  5. Complete and submit the assignment. Shown here is an example from StudySync.

  6. Confirm that you wish to submit the assignment by clicking Yes.

  7. X out of the success message.

Grading an assignment (teachers)

To grade assignments and view grades in your classes:

  1. After students have submitted the assignment, go back in to Schoology and return to the course.

  2. Click on the name of the assignment you want to grade.

  3. The assignment from Dragonfly, StudySync, or Traverse will load inside Schoology. Teachers using Twig Science: You will be redirected to the Product Portal to navigate to and then grade the assignment.
  4. Grade the assignment. 
  5. Where it says Scores Sent Never, click on Scores Sent to send the scores back to Schoology.

  6. Confirm your decision by clicking Yes in the Send Scores Now window.

  7. Go to the Gradebook and you'll see a row for each student with their grades. (You may need to click refresh to see this.)

    You can edit the grades via the three dots at the top of each column.
