Starting a Live Learn session
Navigate to the content you want to share with your class. Click the Assign dropdown menu on the right side of page, then choose Live Learn.
Selecting class for Live Learn session
Select a class and click "Get Started" to start your Live Learn session. This will automatically generate an assignment for the students in that class.
Note
Creating a Live Learn session on top of a preexisting class assignment will not create a new assignment for the same class; Live Learn will use the same assignment code.
A Live Learn session can only be assigned to one class at a time.
Entering a Live Learn session
After selecting your class, you will be directed to the Live Learn session.
Using Multiple Devices
Live Learn can be used in multiple ways to fit your classroom. We recommend the following setup for teachers. Learn more about them in the following slides.

Student access to Live Learn
Students can access the Live Learn session by going to their class assignments and clicking on either the assignment title or the "Live Learn" button.
Choosing the Live Learn pacing
Teachers can choose to control the lesson pace, or let students work through the Lesson Plan at their own individual pace.
- Toggle Teacher pacing from the bottom toolbar
- When this button is on, students will be locked to the teacher's current card
Navigating between cards
Use ← and → keyboard arrows to move from one card to another. You can also navigate between cards from the bottom toolbar. Click a card number or the arrows to change the selected card.
Pulse checks
Pulse checks allow you to create an in the moment question to ask your students.

- Only one response can be chosen per pulse check
Live Learn options
Accessing teaching notes
Click on "Notes" on the bottom right side of the toolbar to see teaching notes.
Note
Teaching notes are not visible to students.
Annotating in Live Learn
Teachers can annotate in a Live Learn session. Toggle annotation tools on/off by clicking "Annotate" in the bottom toolbar.
Student devices see teacher annotations in real time. Annotations will be retained when you move from card to card, but will disappear when you end the Live Learn session. Co-teachers also have the ability to annotate during a Live Learn session.
Caution
Annotation is not available while viewing or sharing a student’s response.
Learn more about annotations.
Viewing connected students
Click "People" to see how many students are connected to your session, and their names.
Student Response Grid
To view student responses in a grid format, select Class under the People tab. Be sure Teacher Paced is on.
You will be able to see at a glance how the class is responding, spot patterns and misconceptions and make informed decisions around reteaching.
Viewing student work
When teacher pacing is set to "Off," you will be able to see which cards your students are working on at any given time.
Click a student's name to view the same card as the selected student.
You can still view student work while in teaching mode, allowing you to keep students on task and still see how students are responding.
Note
The small green circle by the student's initials is an indicator that the student is active in the Live Learn session.
Viewing student responses
If the Lesson Plan being presented includes questions that require student input, clicking on the student's name (or on the card number they are on if teacher pacing is set to "Off") will show the student's responses.
- Click either "Class View" or the student's name again to stop viewing their responses.
- Click "Share" to anonymously share the student work to the rest of the class.
Sharing student work
If student anonymization is turned on the class will not see the name of the student whose answers are being shared.
Click on "Stop" next to the student name to stop sharing the student's work to the class.
Viewing students' updated responses
If the student made any changes to any of their responses on any card, a “refresh” icon will appear.
Click the refresh icon to see the student's changes. If nothing new appears, the student most likely made a change or addition on a different card.
Checking average student performance
For cards with digital items, the card navigation bubbles provide real-time insights into class performance for each item. A student must complete the entire question card for this information to be reflected to the teacher.
- Red bubbles indicate a class average less than or equal to 50%
- Yellow bubbles are between 51% and 79%
- Green bubbles indicate between 80% and 100%.
As more students complete each question card, the circle around the bubble will continue to form. A complete circle means all students have attempted the question card.
Note
Questions that require manual grading will not be reflected in the average student performance unless the teacher previously manually graded the question.
Understanding card bubbles
- If the card is not a question, the card indicator bubble is shown as a light blue circle with a solid white background when selected.
- If the card is not a question, the card indicator bubble is shown as a light blue circle with a solid blue background when not selected.
- If the card is a question, the card indicator bubble is shown as a dashed circle with a solid blue background when not selected.
The card indicator bubble appears blue when a question:
- Has at least one student response
- Cannot be auto-graded
- Has not been previously graded
Hover your cursor over a card bubble to see more information about student responses for that particular card.
Ending a Live Learn session
To end your Live Learn session, click on "End Live Learn" at the bottom of the page. This will remove all students from the Live Learn Session. Simply closing the Live Learn page will not remove students from the session.
Note
The assignment status will remain "Open" after a Live Learn session ends. You must change the assignment status to "Closed" or "Return with Grade" to block students from changing their responses.
Reviewing student engagement
To view student responses after a Live Learn session is over, head over to the assignment created for the Live Learn session. There you can change the status of the assignment, review grades, and add feedback.
You can also access this page during a Live Learn session on a separate browser tab or window. Refreshing this page will show any score updates that may have occurred during the session.
